How to register at the university

Students © Mairie de Paris

If you are not already registered in a university on your arrival in Paris, contact as quickly as possible the Service Commun Universitaire d'Accueil, d'Orientation et d'Insertion Professionnelle des Etudiants (SCUIO) (General university services for the welcoming, the orientation and the professional insertion of students) of the university closest to where you live.

Note : the Paris CROUS now has for the first time an international welcome service which will be open as of this fall term.
> Contact address : 39 avenue Georges Bernanos 75005 Paris, Tel. + 33 1 40 51 37 32/42/38,
e-mail: international@crous-paris.fr
You must register one year in advance for undergraduate studies.

Once you are effectively registered at the university, you are automatically covered by the French social security scheme. For complementary reimbursements, the personal insurance policy you have taken out takes over.

A language test is required in some universities except for students with a French baccalauréat and students with a French scholarship grant.

Some useful addresses of French language courses for foreigners are given below if you need some help with the language:
- Centre d'information et de documentation pour la jeunesse (CIDJ) (Information and documentation center for young people)
101, quai Branly, 75740 Paris cedex 15, tel. + 33 1 44 49 12 00.
You can check the list of available "French language courses" at this address.

- Alliance française
Ecole de langue et de civilisation françaises (French language and civilization school)
101, bd Raspail Paris 06, tel. + 33 1 45 44 38 28.

- Paris municipal courses for adults
All information is available on the site www.paris.fr, section "Education" then "Les Cours Municipaux d'Adultes" (courses for adults).

It is necessary to obtain a residency permit once you have obtained a certification of completion of pre-registration formalities.

Note : Lots of information in the excellent brochure: The "Livret de l'étudiant étranger" (Foreign Students' Handbook) published by Université Paris VI (link to Université Paris VI).
